Summer Camp
The Westport Art Group is pleased to offer Summer Camp for Kids. There will be two sessions with the theme of “Reduce-Reuse-Remarkable”, A Summer Camp for Young Artists. The first session is Monday–Friday, August 9–13 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and the second separate session is Monday–Friday, August 16–20 at the same time. The camp is for students ages 7–12.
Jennifer Gelinas, artist and instructor, says, “Green kids care about the environment, and we do too. Students will explore the benefits of conservation as they create art objects using everyday items. Some other activities include the study of Alexander Calder and his mobiles. The students will create their own sculptures using the grounds of the art building.”
Tuition is $140 for non-members and $135 for children and grandchildren of members for 15 hours of instruction and fun. Four scholarships are being offered this year.
Contact Nancy Burkholder, 508-636-3039, for applications or scholarships. This program is supported by the Westport Cultural Council through a grant from the Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust administered by the Bank of America.

Jean Hirons Pastel Plein Air Workshop
September 30, and October 1 & 2
Join Jean Hirons for a three day plein air pastel workshop this Fall. Jean’s philosophy is that the finished painting is what is most important, not the technique used to accomplish it, and she brings this philosophy to her teaching and presentations on pastel.
The workshop will run from 10 am to 3 pm, starting on Thursday, September 30, through Saturday, October 2. If weather is inclement, it will be held at the WAG building, 1740 Main Road in Westport.
The fee is $125.00 for members of WAG, and $150.00 for non-members. First come-first served!
Jean is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, the Maryland Pastel Society, and the Pastel Painters’ Society of Cape Cod. She is a native of Mattapoisett, now residing in Rockville, Maryland. She works solely in pastel, loving the intimacy of the medium and the vibrancy of the pigments. She focuses on landscape, seeking underlying abstract patterns of value and color. She is particularly interested in capturing the feel and mood of a scene, as well as the rhythm of shadow and light. She prefers the softest of pastels and works on sanded pastel papers and on textured boards that she prepares herself.
Jean travels to Mattapoisett twice a year to visit family. In the summer she paints on site; at Christmas she takes photos for studio work. She has been painting scenes of Mattapoisett and the South Coast for over twenty years. To register, fill out the form and mail it to WAG, PO Box 157, Westport Point, MA 02791 with a check. Take 1 landscape or still life, with a well-thought-out composition, add atmospheric drama and creative license with color to enhance space, and you have my best recipe of how I would describe my work or what I advocate to my students…of course, with students, I tend to throw in positive, energetic encouragement as well as motivational metaphors to really make the best of it.
