WAG Community Show
-
Join us for our fabulous Annual Summer Community Show and Sale, Friday, July 23 through Sunday, August 1. Our annual summertime show features original artwork and handcrafted items including pottery, jewelry, woodcraft and more! A popular component of the show is our Raffle of 5" x 7" paintings, all donated by WAG artists, and organized and arranged by Madeleine Ferraz and Judy Keeley.
All artists are invited to participate! This show is an opportunity to show off and potentially sell your work.
The art intake date for the show is Monday, July 19 from 2 to 7 pm. For more information please see the “Call for Art” flyer at the WAG center. Preview Party To kick off the show we are having our Preview Party on Thursday evening, July 22, from 5 to 7 pm. Come meet and welcome our new WAG members, and catch up with your fellow artists and craftspeople. We look forward to a marvelous show!
Please Volunteer
This event is not possible without people-power. We respectfully request that all participating artists volunteer in some way to help with the show—just a couple of hours will do it! There are many ways to help (a “Call for Volunteers” flyer is up at the WAG center with more details). Our biggest need is for show “sitters,” to greet visitors, engage them in our wonderful artwork and fine craft, assist with sales and wrap purchases. Help is also needed in preparations (art intake, hanging), hospitality (the Preview Party), and more.
If you are participating in the show (and even if you aren’t!), please consider volunteering. It’s a great way to get to know your fellow artists, WAG members, visitors (hey, they’re coming to see our art!) and contribute to making our show a success! More info and sign-up sheets are at the WAG center. Lots of people flock to our area in the summertime—let’s show ’em what we’ve got!

Jean Hirons Demo
Jean Hirons, a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, the Maryland Pastel Society, and the Pastel Painters’ Society of Cape Cod, demonstrated painting with pastels on June 7. Jean had prepared a textured art board with a water-soluble graphite drawing of a scene in Spain where she visited recently. On top of the graphite Jean did an underpainting in watercolor, and when it was dry, painted pastels on top of it. It was fascinating to watch the process and the full house asked her many questions about her tools, materials and techniques.
Jean travels to Mattapoisett twice a year to visit family. In the summer she paints on site; at Christmas she takes photos for studio work. She has been painting scenes of Mattapoisett and the South Coast for over twenty years.
She works solely in pastel, loving the intimacy of the medium and the vibrancy of the pigments. She focuses on landscape, seeking underlying abstract patterns of value and color. She is particularly interested in capturing the feel and mood of a scene, as well as the rhythm of shadow and light. She prefers the softest of pastels and works on sanded pastel papers and on textured boards that she prepares herself.
“Fur & Feathers” Reception
The “Fur & Feathers” reception was held on Sunday, April 25, from 3 to 5 pm. The awards were given out, and Kim Dennis from the Acoaxet Veternary Clinic in Westport awarded the prize for “Most Expressive Animal Painting” . Thank you to Sarah Desjardins for providing the refreshments, and to Paul Vien, Dennis Broadbent and Pat Quinlan for hanging the show. They did a wonderful job!
