Subtractive Monotypes - An Entryway into Printmaking

A One day Workshop with Instructor Kim Gatesman

Saturday, February 7, 12-4pm

Monotypes are a simple, elegant entryway into printmaking. They are not as technical nor physically demanding as other methods. Each utilize mark-making techniques similar to drawing and painting, making this a great class for those familiar with other 2D mediums. Max 10 students.

Most supplies are provided including BFK paper and other special print papers, inks, brayers set up plates for a $15 fee to be paid to the instructor at class. Please bring pencils and an image (appropriate for a charcoal drawing) for your use in class. If you were ever interested in printmaking, this is a great place to start.

Calligraphy Without the constraints
of pen angles and perfect letters

A playful and colorful workshop
Taught by former White House chief calligrapher Rick Paulus

Six weeks: March 10-April 14, Tuesdays, 1:30pm-4:30pm

The Monoline letter is ubiquitous and it has many voices. It was a favorite of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, it has been a staple of advertising for generations, and it takes on new life in the twenty-first century as it plays its role in the expressive calligraphy movement. Discover the diverse and lively world of the magnificent monoline letter in this colorful six-part class where participants explore a playful world, free of the concerns of pen angles, and thicks and thins! From creating White House invitations (really!) to expressive calligraphy pieces and logo design, the monoline pen is as versatile and easy to use as it is fun. Rick’s workshops often refer to history and the influence of calligraphy on type; participants will enjoy flipping the tables as they use type as inspiration for calligraphy. in this workshop, colors will fly with watercolor, gouache, masking fluids, and colored inks! If you have never tried calligraphy at all, this workshop is a very welcoming entry to the wonderful world of letters. For the skilled calligrapher, this workshop will stretch your imagination as you add more range to your calligraphic voice.

All levels welcome! Maximum of 12. Please note: a fee of $15 for handouts will be paid to the instructor at the first class. Questions, please email: info@westportartgroup.com.

Students must bring the required supplies, listed here: Supply List PDF
