"Lessons Learned in Zuni: A Pueblo Memoir" by Richard Tripp - Sunday April 14. Richard Tripp, teacher/farmer/weaver/writer, taught high school English on the Zuni Pueblo reservation in New Mexico from 1969-1972 and spoke about his teaching experiences in Zuni, tales of learning Pueblo pottery and Navajo weaving, anecdotes of his time living in a remote sheep camp behind the sacred mesa, then living in the pueblo itself and observing many ceremonies.

 

Westport, Dartmouth & Tiverton High School Students Show: April 6-7, 2024.

High school artists from Westport, Dartmouth and Tiverton High Schools exhibited their artwork. The show reception was Sunday, April 7th.

First Tuesday, January 9th - Greg Stone zoom presentation. Westport photographer Greg Stone shared his breathtaking photos that capture our local natural world. The focus was the merging of traditional landscape photography with wildlife photography and other active elements to create dynamic landscape images. Small Works Show and Holiday Fair - November 24-December 3. Small Works - Nearly 100 works were for sale at the WAG gallery in Westport. Pieces from the WAG Small Works+ Show made perfect additions to add to a growing art collection, as well as thoughtful and unique gifts for the holidays. We held our Fine Crafts & Ornaments Holiday Fair on December 2nd where there were unique and beautiful gift items including handmade soaps, yarn animals, mandala wall hangings, jewelry, gluten free cookies, metal yard art, macrame items, cards, ornaments and much more! We thank our generous sponsors for raffle gift items and all their support for the art community!

 

First Tuesday, November 7 - Robin Nunes: Palette Knife Oil Painting demo. Robin Nunes is a full time artist who is focused on a personal and playful approach to art. Her use of a palette knife allows her to add an abundance of texture to her paintings. Her love of nature has brought her to the love of painting en plein air. She enjoys painting seascapes and landscapes. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Westport Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Hot + Cold Encaustic and Cold Wax Exhibit: October 26-November 5.

Judged by Kelly Milukas, the following awards were given:

  • Best in Show award winner: Guarded Cove by Marquelynn Raposa

  • Best Cold Wax category: Susan Czernicka

  • Best Encaustic: Dot Bergen's work entitled "Beach Patrol"

  • Honorable Mention: Josie Richmond's work entitled "Compass Winds"

 

First Tuesday, October 3 - Evelyn Bernal: Wet on wet, watercolor demo. Evelyn is a Lincoln, RI artist. "I enjoy wet on wet painting. The free merging and the soft transitions of pigments on a wet paper is very attractive to me. I have been painting this way for many years now and still feels likemagic to me." ~Evelyn.

2023 Invitational Photography Exhibit: September 14 - 16. Over 20 photographers and 60 photographs exhibited. In this show a variety of photographers and a wide range of photographic styles were exhibited. Work covered techniques (traditional and digital) and subject matter: black & white, color, tinted and stereoscopic (3D); printed on paper and metal; nature studies, stilllifes, abstract compositions, people, places; and more.

There was a gallery talk on Friday, September 15 at 5:30 by well known local photographer David Pichette who spoke about his experience with stereo photography (3D).

First Tuesday, Sept. 5th: Peter Guay: Artist talk and portrait drawing demo - Peter works at “Coddiwomple” studio at Sandywoods Center in Tiverton. Coddiwomple is defined as “To travel purposefully toward an as yet unknown destination”. Peter draws and paints portraits in oil, pastel, charcoal & graphite. He strives to have portrait to have more than a likeness. “It is not enough for a drawing to look right and have a good likeness. It needs to be interesting, touching, and evocative to become a true work of genius.” Mau-Kim Yim & Iris Kim.

2023 Summer Community Show - July 27-August 6 - We are grateful you stopped by to enjoy the artwork of 51 local artists at the 2023 Summer Community Show at the Westport Art Group at the WAG gallery at 1740 Main Road, Westport Point, MA. Fun was had by all, including visitors voting for their favorite work to help name The People’s Choice Award and purchasing raffle tickets for a chance to win an original 5x7 painting.

Betsey Macdonald wins People’s Choice award with painting “Fetch”at Summer Community Show. A great work of a very charming subject. The star of her painting is her "rescue" dog, Annie. Congratulations, Betsey! And Lucky Dog!

The show contained gorgeous 2D art in all mediums - watercolor, pastel, oil, photography, mixed media and more - and several 3D sculptural works as well. There are both framed works and unframed bin artwork. Many of the works were for sale. Proceeds from the show fund our programs and support the arts in our community.

 

First Tuesday, August 1 - Jill Law artist talk and abstract acrylic demo

Tuesday August 1st 6:30PM - Multidisciplinary artist, Jill Law, was featured at the WAG August First Tuesday artist talk and demo. She delighted the guests describing her lifelong path to art (with a few stops along the way including being a chef and interior designer!) Jill demonstrated some of her techniques including using modeling clay, silver leaf and resin finish while answering many questions from attendees. Nature has become an inspiration for much of her work. As a painter she works in a variety of mediums. Her artwork has been shown in juried exhibitions across the United States. Jill will have a solo show in Bridgewater in October.

Paint the Town, Westport Art Group’s Spring Show

May 11- 28; Reception Friday, May 12th - Thank you for attending!

Artists were asked to consider the theme, “Paint the Town” : downtown, small town, my town or art expressing joy, having fun or a celebration of creativity.

The exhibit also has two generous sponsors, Manchester Interiors and Country Woolens, both of Westport, that will be choosing Sponsor’s Choice awards. The exhibition will display a diverse variety of media with the artist's creative interpretation of the theme. This exhibit is in conjunction with SouthCoast Spring Arts.




Karen Melanson was awarded the People's Choice award for her pastel, Luminescence.

Emerging Artists, High School Students Show, March 2023

Thank you to the many students who entered the exhibit with high caliber and diverse artwork. We had  56 entries from three area schools, Westport Middle/High School, Dartmouth High School and Tiverton High School. A special thank you to the Art faculty who took time out of their evening and weekend to deliver and pick up the work.

Westport Art Group also offers two $1500 scholarships to students currently in their senior year of high school who intend to pursue a higher degree in Visual Art that meet either of the following criteria: They live in Westport, Dartmouth, or Tiverton, and they are in good standing at Westport High School, Dartmouth High School, Tiverton High School, Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School, Bristol County Agricultural High School, or Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School or they are the children or grandchildren of current Westport Art Group members.
