“MIDWINTER DREAMS”: ART and POETRY

Opening Reception: Sunday, Feb 15, 1pm – 4pm
Show opens Friday, Feb 13 and ends Sunday, Feb 22
with open hours 1 to 4 PM, Fridays through Sundays.

This year, WAG’s Poets will be combining their talents with WAG Visual Artists! This is an exhibition open to all mediums and motifs, including 2D, 3D works and Photography. This is NOT a juried show.

Visual artists may create art in response to a provided poem; and/or offer artwork for poetic response. We would love to have at least 10 -12 pairs for each category. Alternately, Visual Artists may just submit theme-related artwork to the show without participating in the creative exchange.

At the show…

We will set up the show to have two opportunities for the Artist/Poet pairs to share with the public their inspiration and process in creating the linked works. These interactive conversations will occur during the opening reception, as well as between 2-3:30 PM during the last Sunday of the show. We are excited to create this new hybrid show of WAG talent, and look forward to setting it in motion so that everyone has time to produce their best work for this inaugural show.

Visual artists have three choices for entry…

#1. You create an artwork based on a poem.
The Poets will provide 20 different poems on the “Midwinter Dreams” theme for 12 artists to respond to visually. Please email sarbar66@gmail.com by Monday Jan. 12 signaling your interest in participating in this option. A group of poems will be emailed no later than Tuesday Jan. 13 for your quick perusal. We ask that you rank them 1st through 4th choice, sending your list back to Sarah that same day. She will then email you ‘your’ poem for you to begin responding to visually. You need not submit digital images of your artwork to Sarah in this option. Please note which poem you responded to on the back of your work so we can hang the correct poem and painting together.

#2. The Poets create poems based on your artwork.
The Poets invite 12 Visual Artists to provide an artwork for poetic response. For Visual Artists interested in this option, email a digital image to sarbar66@gmail.com no later than Monday Jan. 19. You may submit a pre-existing work that fits the theme of “Winter Dreams”; or create something new inspired by this theme.

#3. Submit your art without collaborating with a poet.
If you choose to submit artwork related to the theme and not participate in the exchange, you need not submit digital images of your work for this option, nor contact Sarah. Enter online below.

Entry Guidelines…

Three entered artworks per visual artist.
—2D Artworks must be framed or gallery wrapped if applicable, and ready to hang with a wire. Sawtooth hangers and 2D work without hanging wire on the back will not be accepted as they will not work with our hanging system. Due to space limitations for this show, maximum size for 2D works will be 36” in either direction and a maximum weight of 20 Lbs.
—3D work should not exceed 16 inches at the base , and may require the artist to provide a stand or pedestal. Any 3D piece heavier than 20 lbs. will require installation by the artist.
—Entries must be your original work, not a reproduction, not AI generated, giclee, or copy of another artwork. Only work that has not been previously shown at WAG will be accepted.
—Your artwork should be submitted for sale (with 25% commission to WAG). Just one artwork of the three can be “not for sale.” Please be sure to specify the price- or NFS.

Bin work: Two pieces of small theme-related or non-related work may be submitted for the Bins and registered at Drop off. Reproductions allowed for Bin work. Pieces must be covered with clear acetate or plastic and have artist name, medium, title and price attached.

WAG reserves the discretion to not show a work, including, for example, a work that does not meet the above criteria.

USE OF IMAGES: Any artwork submitted may be used for marketing and promotional purposes directly related to this show. This use may include publication in any printed materials, advertisements, or electronic media. Copyright and all other rights remain that of the artist. All art must be delivered in person. Name of work, name of artist, address, phone, email and price (or nfs) must be affixed to the back of each piece.

Entry Fees:
MEMBERS OF WAG: $20 for one entry, $25 for up to 3 entries;
NON-MEMBERS: $25 for one entry and $35 for up to 3. Non-members may consider becoming a WAG member: LINK to Join.
WAG retains a 25% commission on all sold artwork.

We encourage MEMBER artists to sign up for gallery sitting, work drop off or pickup, or set up and reception help through SignUpGenius. Those members that volunteer to gallery sit and are paying online may use a discount code at checkout for $15 off the registration fee as specified below.

Important dates…

• Jan 6 – Registration opens

• Jan 12 - Email Sarah Bartlett at sarbar66@gmail.com by Jan 12 to receive a selection of poems for creating your artwork.

• Jan 13 - Sarah Bartlett sarbar66@gmail.com will email poems to you for you to select from; requesting same-day turn-around so she can assign poems accordingly.

• Jan 19 – Deadline to email sarbar66@gmail.com an image of your initial artwork for poetic response.

• Feb 3 - Online registration closes.

• Work drop off dates: Feb 5, 12:00-1:30PM -or- Feb 9, 4-6PM.
  Delivery of art is to: Westport Art Group, 1740 Main Road, Westport 02790
  Utmost care will be taken handling artwork, but WAG is not responsible for loss of or damage to artwork.

• Show opens Friday, Feb 13 and ends Sunday, Feb 22

• All unsold artwork must be picked up when the show closes on Sunday, February 22 from 3:30-4:15 PM or on Monday, February 23 between 4-6 PM or by prior arrangement. Please note WAG policies allow WAG to impose a fee for storing artwork left at the building beyond the pick-up date. WAG will not be responsible for any damage or loss of work after the final designated pick up time.

Registration Instructions…

The entry fee can be paid during online registration by credit card or at drop off, payable with cash, check or credit card. Each artist may submit up to 3 pieces under any of the options they choose to participate in.

STEP 1. ADD TO CART

• Click Add to cart.

• Complete the pop-up form. (No image uploads needed.)

STEP 2. CHECK OUT

• After completing the pop up form, GO TO YOUR CART and follow the prompts. Whether you are paying at drop off or paying online, your registration WILL NOT BE COMPLETE without going to your cart and checking out.

Payment: If paying online, select your payment method. Note: If you are using an iPhone, the Apple Pay cart is a very small shopping basket icon at the very bottom of the page. You may click on the Apple icon to complete credit card payment.

Discount Code (Members only): To receive your discount for Gallery Sitting: During checkout, enter the code PICTURE in the Discount box BEFORE completing check out.
